Classical guitarist Yunchen Liu was born in Shanghai in 1992 and began playing the guitar at the age of 10. In 2010, he was admitted to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where he completed his bachelor's degree under the instruction of Professor Danny Yeh. In August 2014, he was admitted to the University of Arizona's Bolton Guitar Studies with a full scholarship to study with Professor Tom Patterson and in May 2016 he obtained his master's degree. In the same year, he took a full scholarship to pursue a doctoral degree (Doctor of Music Art) and serve as a teaching assistant.
He has participated in many major international guitar events such as the "Japan International Guitar Art Festival", "Korea International Guitar Art Festival", and "Iserlohn International Guitar Symposium" in Germany—where his performances were unanimously recognized and appreciated by the experts present—and many others. In October 2009, he won second place in the “First National Classical Guitar Invitation Contest” held by Shanghai Conservatory of Music. In May 2013, he participated in the special performance of the Shanghai Ensemble and served as the chief of the “Second National Classical Guitar Seminar” hosted by the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. He was awarded second place in the "Arts and Shoots - Music Broker PK Competition” and was interviewed by the "New Youth" section of Shanghai Art and Humanities TV.
With his passion for collaboration, Yunchen formed the Sendo Classical Guitar Quartet in June 2013 and served as the principal player, performing at a number of venues. In November 2013, he held his first classical guitar concert at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center. His rich experience also made him more open in the professional field, and his professional standards have been widely recognized. In March 2015 he traveled to Italy, Germany, and Austria to perform both solo and chamber music concerts, and was interviewed by the famous radio station RAI in Trieste, Italy.
As a teacher he has had many students admitted to prestigious programs at the Nanjing Academy of Art, the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and the middle school of Shanghai Conservatory of Music. During his tenure in the United States, a number of his undergraduate students have achieved outstanding results in international competitions in the United States.
During his studies he has had the opportunity to play for many internationally renowned artists, including Grammy Award winners David Russell and Duo Assad, Pavel Steidl, Manuel Barrueco, Zoran Dukic, Shin-ichi Fukuda, and Solo Duo.
