Renato Serrano Biographical Review

Renato Serrano has performed on important stages in more than ten countries in America and Europe, offering recitals and masterclass at festivals such as "Tampere Guitar Festival" (Tampere, Finland), "Tallinn Guitar Festival" (Tallinn, Estonia), "José Tomás International Guitar Festival" (Petrer, Spain), "Estação Musical International Guitar Festival " (Porto Alegre, Brazil), "Guitar Foundation of America Regional Convention" (Phoenix, USA), and "Bach Society Concert Season" (Tucson, USA), among others.

 

In Chile, he has performed in the official seasons of the Teatro Municipal of Santiago, of the Chilean Symphony Orchestra (as soloist), of the USACH Classical Orchestra (as soloist), “Entrecuerdas” Guitar Festival, among other important national events. He has constantly been invited to give recitals and teach masterclass at the Universidad de Chile, Ernesto Quezada Foundation, Papageno Foundation, Universidad Mayor, Universidad Católica Silva Henríquez, and Universidad de Playa Ancha.

 

Renato received more than ten awards in the international guitar competitions he has participated, highlighting the 1st Prize in the "Andrés Segovia International Guitar Competition" (La Herradura, Spain), the 1st Prize in the “José Tomás International Guitar Competition" (Petrer, Spain), and the 1st Prize in the "Ciudad de Vélez Málaga International Guitar Competition" (Málaga, Spain). He also won the 2nd Prize in the "Francisco Tárrega International Guitar Competition" (Benicassim, Spain) and in the "Alhambra-USA International Guitar Competition" (Texas, USA), among many other distinctions.

 

 

Renato began his musical training at the Universidad Católica de Chile, under the tutelage of Professor Alejandro Peralta Beher. Years later, he continued his musical studies in the United States, where he completed a Master's Degree in Music Performance and a Doctorate in Musical Arts in the "Fred Fox School of Music", at the University of Arizona, under the direction of Thomas Patterson as Principal Professor, and including artists such as David Russell, Sérgio Assad, and Odair Assad as Professors/Artists in Residence. In this institution he worked as Teaching Assistant in the guitar area for more than five years. As a pedagogue and researcher, he has presented research at conferences in the US, Finland, Chile, and Brazil. During 2016, he contributed with an article for “The SAGE International Encyclopedia of Music and Culture”, recently released by SAGE Publications in the USA. He is currently adjunct professor for undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as Chief of the Music Department at the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, located in southern Brazil.
